Through viewing the found image in newspapers, magazines
and on the Internet I have developed a strong interest in photography, and
painting from photography, through this I have been lead to the idea of the
reciprocal view, viewing the viewer; be it the photographer, editor or the
gallery visitor. Taking found, and self taken photographs, I merge and alter
these images through the medium of paint, and in doing so attempt to create a
more intriguing ambiguous image.
All my life I have made art. It is an activity central to my life. In whatever medium I have worked (printmaking, ceramics, sculpture, painting, drawing) my aim is to make pieces that have a life of their own. In doing so my hope is that the spectator will be enriched, if only for a moment and in the most miniscule way. Observation, drawing, looking, raiding every art form and culture and doodling are all occupations that fuel my continued activity.
Elisabeth has painted most of her life and now paints in both acrylic and water colour and uses collage. She is inspired by the correlation of shape and colour and by turning happy accidents to her advantage. She has exhibited with the Royal Institute of Painters in Water Colour, the Royal Society of British Artists, Vivartis, Yvonne Arnaud Art and other galleries in London and the South West of Surrey. Her paintings are in collections all over Britain and in the United States, Canada, Spain and New Zealand.
Woking artist Rosalind O’Connor started painting 18 years ago. Her paintings include a rich variety of bustling street scenes, atmospheric landscapes and vivid still life. She works in watercolour, acrylics, acrylic ink and mixed media. Last summer she had 2 paintings in the Mall Galleries, London at the Society of Women Artists exhibition. She also exhibits with Woking Society of Arts, Guildford Arts Society and Cranleigh Arts and Crafts Society and has sold over 60 paintings at their exhibitions. She recently won first place in a Woking competition for a vibrant and colourful painting of Woking Market. She has been influenced by classes in watercolour and life drawing and by workshops with various artists. She is a founder member of the “Carry on Painting” group and is a member of the “West Surrey Artists”, a group of 10 artists who exhibit together.
Juliet’s first love is drawing. She trained initially at Guildford Art College before working as a freelance designer for Penguin Books, Faber & Faber and BBC Publications, and also as a visualizer at the advertising agency Mather &Crowther. She specialized in illustrating books on cookery. She now concentrates on drawing and painting ‘on the spot’. Although she is known for local scenes, she has travelled in SE Asia, Southern Europe and Turkey. In 1996, 21 of her paintings were chosen to hang in the first class cabins of Swann Hellenic’s cruise liner MV Minerva. Her work has been exhibited with the Pastel, Marine, Portrait and Watercolour Societies. Four of her paintings are in the Guildford Borough Council permanent collection. Juliet teaches regularly with SCC Adult Education Service and also privately. Her subjects range across portraits, landscapes, buildings and anything to do with boats and fishing.
Born in 1932, Basil loved art as a child but pursued a career in retail furniture. On his retirement in 1993 he took up painting again and joined several Art Groups. Having met Ken Wray in 1995 he joined his school of art gaining a grade A in A level art. Over the last two or three years Basil has moved away from his more traditional work towards semi-abstract in oil and acrylic. He exhibits and sells his work widely.
I often begin with an insignificant background figure taken
from a newspaper cutting. I then work through drawings and collage to the finished paintings in oils. The paintings are made and remade, layers added and removed, always with equal emphasis on the figures and their abstract ground. I only paint men. They are dressed in suits, or shirts and ties. In groups this ubiquitous uniform gives them a collective identity and allows me to explore favourite themes of repetition and mirror imaging. There is always an interaction between the figures and the recurring motifs of the background. The solitary figures are almost portraits. They inhabit inexplicable spaces, more emotional or imaginary than real. The ambiguous surroundings accentuate the isolation of the figures. I grew up in Scotland and attended Edinburgh University. In 2005 I completed a B.A. (Hons.) at Wimbledon School of Art and I now work in London. I have paintings in collections in the UK and abroad.
Jill has studied watercolour painting in Duncton, since 1999, with Christopher Baker (Sussex painter, and tutor at West Dean). A highlight was ‘Spontaneity through Intellect’ when she worked from a pigeon feather for two terms and progressed to large works (110x150cm). Her Feather Landscape was accepted for the C21 Watercolour Exhibition at Bankside Gallery in February 2007. In 2008 she started to experiment with mono-printing: the results, all inspired by specific landscape, are often surprising. Jill is an exhibiting member of Guildford and Farnham Art
Societies. As a member of ‘Artists at Duncton’ she has exhibited annually in
Petworth House and Chichester’s Oxmarket since 2006.
