Artist sponsored by Guildford Arts wins 2009 Threadneedle Prize of £25,000

Sheila Wallis, who graduated from UCA Farnham this year, and was the holder of an award funded by Guildford Arts and Clyde & Co, has won the prestigious 2009 Threadneedle Prize of £25,000. She has also been appointed artist in residence at the Watts Gallery. She will be exhibiting at a future Art@Clyde&Co exhibition.

Derry-born, part-time NHS support worker Sheila Wallis has won the 2009 Threadneedle Prize, the largest art prize awarded by the public in the UK.  Sheila received a cheque for £25,000 from Simon Davies, Executive Chairman of Threadneedle Investments, at a special Awards dinner held at the Mall Galleries.

Sheila’s current work explores the human body, with an emphasis placed on communicating a sense of the ‘creatureliness’ of the human condition. It makes enquiry into the material, physical qualities of the medium, allowing room for the viewer to experience a degree of freedom to feel as well as think about the visual experience.

Self-portrait (above) was one of seven works shortlisted by a panel of five artists (Michael Leonard, Cathy Lomax, Jock McFadyen, Nina Murdoch and Daphne Todd) and one guest selector, Desmond Shawe-Taylor, Surveyor of The Queen’s Pictures.
